A fifth candle (white), is lit on Christmas Day and signifies the appearnace of the promised Saviour.

The Advent season begins the fourth Sunday before Christmas Eve. Each day in Advent, often at the main meal the candles are lit: one candle the first week, two the second three the third (pink) and all four during the last week, through Christmas Eve. Each lighting is accompanied by a blessing, a scriptural reading and the singing of a verse from "O'come, O'come, Emmanuel." A different member of the family, usually starting with the father, leads the ceremony and lights the candles each evening.
